ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Our North Shore client wanted a whole home renovation and addition to create a more spacious master suite and room that could accommodate all members of their family. They originally wanted to keep the existing kitchen. However, once they saw the open space our new home renovations created, they realized the two styles would clash like Mr. Brady’s checkered bell-bottoms and paisley shirts. So we designed a new kitchen — on the fly.

The Bradys’ bungalow had two bedrooms for six kids. Our client wanted each kid to have their own bedroom. This meant adding two bedrooms. They also wanted indoor recreational space.

With a large family, the best thing for your sanity is to herd everyone outdoors. So we also built them a spacious deck, and leveled the backyard to make it more inviting for kids to play.

Renovation Challenges:

• Basement was originally partitioned by walls and a fireplace whose placement made zero sense.
• Tricky structural modifications were needed in order to open up the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
• The client originally wanted to keep the existing kitchen. However, once they saw the open space our new renovations created, they realized the two styles would clash like Mr. Brady’s checkered bell-bottoms and paisley shirts. So we designed a new kitchen — on the fly.

Design and planning notes:

• Created separate ‘Sanity-Zones’: Master Suite, Kid-Zone, Teen-Zone.
• Installed millwork to hide everything from Lego to ironing boards.
• Maintained raw-wood details throughout the home that worked with the modern West Coast feel we were creating.
• Seamlessly blended the new addition with existing siding, roof lines & soffits.
